The Benefits of Vitamin D Supplements During Pregnancy

Taking vitamin D supplements during pregnancy can be helpful for the baby’s health. It can also help to reduce the risk of preterm birth and preeclampsia.

Low Maternal 25(OH)D Levels

Various health outcomes during pregnancy, such as gestational diabetes and preeclampsia, have been associated with low maternal 25(OH)D levels. However, the relationship between maternal 25(OH)D levels and newborn anthropometric measurements have yet to be thoroughly investigated. This review aims to identify studies that have examined the association between maternal 25(OH)D levels and birth outcomes.

Studies were included if they assessed serum 25(OH)D levels during pregnancy and reported results. The studies included were identified through the Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations (NDL) database and the Cochrane database of systematic reviews. The studies were assessed for risk of bias by two review authors.

Two trials involving 219 pregnant women were selected. The studies investigated the effect of vitamin D supplementation on gestational diabetes. The studies reported similar risk ratios (95% CI 0.25, 1.05). In addition, the trials reported similar effects on preeclampsia. However, the problems did not report other secondary maternal outcomes.

The studies were classified into sufficient and deficient 25(OH)D. The levels of 25(OH)D were determined based on a multiple linear regression analysis. This analysis showed that maternal 25(OH)D levels strongly correlated with newborn 25(OH)D levels.

Lower Risk of Preterm Birth

Vitamin D plays a role in fetal and maternal outcomes during pregnancy. It is important for the prevention of preeclampsia and preterm birth and the development of fetal bone. It also may prevent pregnancy-related tuberculosis. However, more research is needed to understand better the effects of vitamin D supplementation during pregnancy on these and other maternal and fetal outcomes.

Vitamin D deficiency is common in pregnant women. It has been found to be associated with lower maternal 25(OH)D serum levels.

Although several studies have shown the relationship between vitamin D deficiency and preterm birth, less is known about the effect of vitamin D on the developing fetus and newborn. For instance, more research is needed to determine whether vitamin D supplementation during pregnancy is safe, effective, and has positive long-term effects.

Several studies have shown a positive association between prenatal vitamin D levels and cognitive development. In addition, vitamin D deficiency has been linked to impaired neurodevelopment and bone health.

In addition to its role in pregnancy, vitamin D may play an immunomodulatory role in preventing fetal rejection. In this regard, studies have shown that pregnant women who have high 25(OH)D levels have healthier babies.

Gestational Diabetes

During pregnancy, many women experience a vitamin D deficiency. Vitamin D supplements during pregnancy can help alleviate this deficiency. However, the safest and most effective dose of vitamin D during pregnancy is unclear.

The present study compared the effects of vitamin D supplementation during pregnancy on the occurrence of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). This condition is characterized by hyperglycemia during pregnancy and is associated with numerous adverse perinatal outcomes.

This study included pregnant women who met the risk factors for GDM. The women were randomized into one of two groups. The intervention group took 5000 units of vitamin D per week. The control group took a placebo. A trained midwife evaluated the participants in a maternity clinic.

The results showed that the intervention group had a significantly lower hospitalization rate during pregnancy and neonatal hyperbilirubinemia. The cesarean section rate was also reduced. However, there was no significant difference in Apgar scores.

The results indicated a positive correlation between the total weight increment during pregnancy and the midgestational 25-hydroxyvitamin D level. There was a negative correlation between the 25-hydroxyvitamin D level and the pregestational BMI.

Preeclampsia

Preeclampsia is a pregnancy-specific syndrome in which high blood pressure occurs after the twentieth week of pregnancy. Visual disturbances, elevated blood pressure, and proteinuria characterize it. During pregnancy, vitamin D supplements are used to lower blood pressure and prevent preeclampsia.

Vitamin D is a hormone that affects blood pressure by regulating calcium homeostasis. It also affects immunity and inflammation. The vitamin D status of women in early pregnancy is associated with preeclampsia.

A substudy investigated the effects of vitamin D on preeclampsia by comparing vitamin D levels during pregnancy to preeclampsia cases. It was found that women with sufficient vitamin D levels in late pregnancy had a lower rate of preeclampsia.

Similarly, vitamin D insufficiency was found to be associated with an increased rate of preeclampsia. It needs to be clarified what criteria should be used for high-risk vitamin D status.

To evaluate vitamin D dosage in pregnancy, serum levels of vitamin D3 were analyzed. The study population consisted of women undergoing prenatal care at Besat Hospital of Sanandaj City. The sample was divided into two groups: placebo and vitamin D supplementation.
